Phyllis Hill
Phyllis Jo Hill joined the faculty of the University of Illinois in 1952. During her 25 years with the College of Applied Health Sciences,
she served as professor, associate dean, acting dean, and director of women’s sports. She directed the campus Peace Corps program, and was a
member of campus committees on student discipline, planning and facilities, and pay equity. As associate and acting dean, Dr. Hill guided the
College through the process of merging the men's and women's athletic and physical education programs, which required major restructuring of
academic programs, degree requirements, and academic standards. She retired in 1977 and assumed full-time residence in Wisconsin, where she became
involved in teacher education and curriculum development, eventually serving as director of education for the State of Wisconsin Department of
Corrections. She returned to Illinois in 2004 to participate in a university-wide recognition of women who had distinguished themselves in
collegiate sports or as administrators of women's sports programs in days before such contributions were honored.
