Phyllis J. Hill Faculty Award for Exemplary Mentoring
The College of Applied Health Sciences seeks nominations for the Phyllis J. Hill Award for Exemplary Mentoring in the Edmund J. James
Scholar Program. Named in memory of Dr. Phyllis Hill, a beloved professor and college administrator, this award annually recognizes a
faculty member in the College of Applied Health Sciences who has done an outstanding job of guiding and mentoring students throughout
their James Scholar experience. The James Scholar Program, named for the fourth president of the University of Illinois, Edmund J. James,
is the honors program within the College. It is designed to provide unique learning opportunities for undergraduates who have achieved
academic excellence. Mentoring by faculty is critical to ensuring an engaging and rewarding scholarly experience for James Scholars.
Faculty mentors exemplify a deep commitment to providing an honors experience that allows students to:
- Think critically about issues in their field
- Better understand the process and complexity of collection and analysis of data
- Become contributors to the body of knowledge that currently exists
- Question and create new knowledge through their research
All current AHS faculty (tenured, tenured-track and instructional staff) are eligible for this award as long as they have been in the
College for at least three years. Nominees must also have supported James Scholar student research efforts for a minimum of one year (fall
and spring semesters).
Current James Scholars and alumni of the James Scholar program may nominate faculty for this prestigious award. The deadline for nominations
is October 21, 2011.
